Investigations by other organisations
There are other organisations responsible for investigating whether you have committed a criminal offence and who may wish to ask you about your involvement. You have the right to be advised and assisted during these investigations.
Examples of organisations responsible for carrying out criminal investigations and Prosecutions are:
- The Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) investigate people who claim benefits and who have failed to declare that they are also working or have savings or other assets.
- Your local Council are responsible for investigating fraudulent claims for housing benefit or failing to secure your child’s regular attendance at school.
- The RSPCA investigate dangerous dogs, allegations of animal cruelty and other offences linked to the ownership or welfare.
- Ofcom investigate unlicensed ‘pirate’ radio broadcasts.
Unlike police investigations this is means tested. If you are in receipt of benefits or have low income, we can attend and advise you for free. If you are in employment, then you may have to pay towards the cost of advice and assistance.
